Once the cleanup is complete, the building is emptied and demolition work begins.

When we visited the workshop and home of Murakami Recipe, who we asked to do the interior design for this project, in Nakagawa, Fukuoka, we were so impressed by how carefully he renovated the old house, the woodwork and furniture he produced, and his lifestyle that was rooted in everyday life that we suddenly started talking about renovations on the first day we visited.

After nearly a year of meetings, we went to India together this summer, where we talked about what we like, expressions, and the images we wanted, and gradually shared our sensibilities, and then construction began.

The lighting in front of the work desk was also made by Murakami using waste materials from the demolition.

It is a hassle just to store unused ladders, wooden boards, and textured tin sheets in a small room at the back, or to move them around in the scorching heat of the sun.

When renovating an old house, the layout is more or less set, so it is easy to imagine what it will look like after the renovation, but when renovating a barn, although the general framework is set, there are many things to consider, such as issues with the layout, how much of the old materials to keep and how much to make new, and so on, and these need to be resolved one by one.

This time, the renovation is to turn it into a cafe and home.

With the future in mind, they will be reinforcing the foundations of the house so that they can live there themselves.

The piles of scrap wood produced when demolishing the ceiling boards and the wood chips that come up during renovation will be used as firewood, as I am planning to install a wood stove, which has always been my dream, in my new house.
