Akha chair

Yasuhide Ono

The Aka tribe chair, the highlight of our purchase in Thailand this time, arrived last night.
It's so cool that I don't think I'll ever find anything like it again.
I always think that good and beautiful things have no borders.
Even today, many mountain tribes live in the mountainous regions of Thailand, Laos, Myanmar, and China's Yunnan Province.
Well-known ethnic groups include the Hmong, Lisu, Karen, Akha, Lua, and others, and there are currently over one million people living there.
In Thai markets, you often see people from the Hmong, Akha, and Lisu tribes selling traditional handicrafts.
However, their lives are also changing dramatically, perhaps due to the effects of modernization and globalization.
Even so, some of their creations are still produced using the same techniques as in the past, but the number is decreasing.
After asking around and looking around a lot about the Aka tribe chairs that I'm introducing this time, I found that the manufacturing method has changed, and now the mainstream chairs have seats made of woven bamboo.
This chair has a seat made of pony hide, and its appearance is quite different from current chairs.
The base and seat are woven with leather cord.
The circular part of the base is carved out and neatly joined, so it is very strong.
The material used is very thick bamboo, so it is very light.
The size is 50cm high x 30cm wide. (Each one may have slight individual differences.)
¥22000(including tax)
The more you look at the details, the more you see how simple yet intricate it is.
Of course, it looks like pony hide, so it is soft and extremely comfortable to sit on.
I heard that this is made by an Aka grandfather who only makes it when he feels like it, so I'm very intrigued to see if I'll be able to come across it again.
Please come and sit in our shop.
Next time we will introduce the same Aka tribe bag!
The shipment from India is finally due to arrive, so please look forward to that as well.
